Obel Jackson, Azu of the Mbasi and Former Prime Minister
“My name is Obel Jackson, Azu of the Mbasi sub clan. I previously served in the office of the Prime Minister,” he says. In that office he oversaw agriculture and headed all the Azus, the sub clan leaders of the kingdom. He was elected with one main charge: to combat food insecurity.
On that count he is content. “I can confidently say that my people have successfully cultivated abundant crops, like sweet potatoes,” he reports.
Education is his other front, and a personal one. “Though I stopped at primary seven, I could not continue due to school fees challenges,” he says. The clan now runs an annual educational mentorship programme to push the younger generation toward higher education, to achieve, as he puts it, what his generation could not. Last year the clan celebrated the graduation of five of its students.
His everyday duties remain those of an Azu: settling disputes and holding the Mbasi together.
