The role of women in the transmission of Batwa culture to the young

Vastina is a mother of two, wife to Biranje Richard the Amakondere blower, and adopted daughter to Sembagare. She is a lead vocalist and dancer in the Batwa community of Birara.

In the Batwa community, women play a key role in the conservation of culture and act as the first custodians and transmitters to their children during social events and while they are at home.

Vastina says she owes her knowledge and skill to her Uncle Sembagare and Aunt Paskaziah (Sembagare’s wife) Right now she is teaching one of her daughters and sisters to sing and dance like her, as a way of preserving her heritage, she continues to say, it is an art she believes will make their lives better through performances to earn a living in future.

Oral tradition and Transmission of Batwa culture to the young generation.
